2008 Awards for Design Excellence
Palm Beach Chapter of The American Institute of
Architects
Objective
To encourage excellence in Architecture, the Palm
Beach Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
announces its annual program of Awards for Design
Excellence in Architecture. Through this program,
the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects seeks to honor works of distinction
by its members and bring public attention to outstanding
Architectural Design rendered by its members in
recent years.
Eligibility
All entries shall be architectural projects designed
by registered architects of Florida who are members
of the Palm Beach Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects. The project may be anywhere in
the world. Projects which have won awards in other
programs are eligible for submission. Award winning
projects in the program may not be resubmitted
in future years except for Test of Time Award;
all others may be submitted if building completion
was within the last six (6) years of the current
year. All entries must be submitted in the manner
herein specified.
Program Schedule
August 4, 2008: Call for entries September 15, 2008 by 4:00 p.m.:
Completed entry form, including fee and client/owner
permission due at this time. Nomination forms
also due by this date and time returned
to address below. October 6, 2008 by 4:00 p.m.:
Design and Honor Award entries submitted. November 21, 2008: Awards Presentation
Dinner/Reception
Entry Fees / Entry Forms
The entry fee is $125 for each submission, which
will be utilized to cover the cost of the required
submission materials, mailing, jury expenses,
award certificates and publicity. No entry fees
will be refunded. Check or money orders shall
be payable to the Palm Beach Chapter of the American
Institute of Architects. The entry form and fee
must be received no later than deadline above.
Late entries will not be considered.

Design Award Categories
This year's program will include the following
categories. Projects will be judged separately
in the following 3 categories:
Award for Excellence in Architecture
Encompasses New Work, Renovations & Additions,
and Historic Preservation & Restoration and
must have been completed January 1, 2002.
Un-Built Design
Encompasses Commissioned and Non-Commissioned
work. This category also recognizes work by associate
members and architectural students presently enrolled
in an accredited architectural degree program
in the State of Florida who are members of AIAS.
Projects must have been undertaken since January
1, 2002.
Test of Time
Encompasses projects 25 years old or older that
were designed by an architect practicing in Palm
Beach County at the time of completion. Projects
may be located anywhere in the world.
Honor Award Categories (All Categories are Nominated)
Firm of the Year
This award recognizes outstanding achievement
in design, community services, education, and
service to the profession and the AIA by an architectural
firm. Projects, accomplishments and service submitted
must reflect a period of at least 10 years. The
firm must be a Palm Beach Chapter AIA Firm Member
and have been under the direction of the same
principal or principals for a period of ten (10)
years or more. Submission is required by the nominee
for jury consideration.
Forms may be self nominated or by any Palm Beach
Chapter AIA member.
Design Honor Award
This award recognizes an individual architect
who has, by the high quality and originality of
one's whole body of work over an extended period
of time, advanced the cause and public value of
good architecture and by one's leadership provided
in inspiration to colleagues.
Any member of Palm Beach Chapter AIA is eligible
for this award. The architect's work under consideration
must extend over a period of not less than 10
years. Submission is required by the nominee for
jury consideration.
Individuals may nominate themselves or be nominated
by any Palm Beach Chapter AIA member.
Gold Medal Award
(Highest Honor) This award recognizes an individual
architect in Palm Beach County who has distinguished
himself or herself in a manner resulting in a
profound impact on the profession over an extended
period of time. This is the highest award that
Palm Beach Chapter AIA can bestow on one of its
members and only one may be given in a year.
Any individual who has been a member of Palm Beach
Chapter AIA for a minimum of 10 years is eligible.
The individual's long-term, noteworthy accomplishments
in the AIA, as well as community organizations
or governmental bodies, must demonstrate distinguishable
results characterizing one's career in a manner
over and above what is normally expected.
Submissions are not required of the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Silver Medal Community Service Award
This award is given to recognize a Palm Beach
Chapter AIA architect whose leadership in community
activities and service has been a direct benefit
to the profession or community and who, by their
interest, activity and concern for the profession
of architecture, shall have advanced the cause
of good design and planning, and/or contributed
to the dignity and value of the architectural
profession as an elected or an appointed employed
government official.
The individual's leadership and service must demonstrate
qualities, outcomes in works of art, programs
or civic influences that have benefited the profession
or the community (this includes AIA members who
hold a government office). Any member of Palm
Beach Chapter AIA in good standing, whose leadership
in a community fulfills the intent and purpose
of this award is eligible.
Submissions are not required of the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
John Stetson FAIA Service Award
Palm Beach Chapter AIA has established this award
in the memory of John Stetson, FAIA, whose devoted
service to the AIA Chapter was over and above
his official capacities. It is hoped that this
award will perpetuate John's memory and those
things for which he stood in our profession. This
award will be given to a Palm Beach Chapter AIA
member for outstanding service to the chapter
which is over and above that normally required
of a member of the AIA.
Any member of the Palm Beach Chapter AIA who has
exemplified the purpose of this award is eligible.
Submission is not required by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member. Individuals may not nominate themselves.
Bob Graham Architectural Awareness Award
The Bob Graham, Honorary AIA, Architectural Awareness
Award is given to an individual citizen or public
official who is not an architect, and who by their
interest, activity and concern for the profession
or architecture, shall have advanced the cause
of good design and planning and/or contributed
to the dignity and value of the architectural
profession. The Award is named in honor of Bob
Graham, two-time Governor of Florida and member
of the U.S. Senate, who has been designated an
honorary member of the AIA for his outstanding
support of architecture in both his public and
private life.
Any person who is not an architect is eligible.
Submission is not required by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Professional Affiliate Member of the Year
Award
This award recognizes a Professional Affiliate
Member who is not an architect, but who, by their
interest, participation and concern, has promoted
and contributed to the dignity and value of Palm
Beach Chapter AIA and the architectural profession.
This award will be given for outstanding service
to the Palm Beach Chapter AIA which is over and
above that normally required of an affiliate member.
Any Professional Affiliate Member of Palm Beach
Chapter AIA is eligible. Submission is not required
by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Craftsman Award
This award will be given to a craftsman in Palm
Beach County, Florida who has exemplified interest,
ingenuity, and outstanding performance in the
pursuit of one's trade or craft. This award pertains
to outstanding craftsmanship performed in any
phase of construction.
Any craftsman who is a resident of Palm Beach
County, Florida and who has performed outstanding
workmanship in the pursuit of a craft or trade
is eligible. In order to recognize the talent
in our state, the immediate past recipient is
ineligible. Submission is not required by the
nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Photographer of the Year
This award recognizes high quality and originality
in still photographs, which advance the cause
of outstanding architectural photography. The
photographs must have been taken during years
prior to when the nominee is being considered.
In order to recognize the talent in our area,
the immediate past recipient is ineligible. Submission
is not required by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by the Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Builder of the Year
This award recognizes a company or firm in Palm
Beach County who has exemplified a sincere and
genuine interest in encouraging and affecting
outstanding craftsmanship and workmanship in the
performance of work on a specific project. Such
company may be a general contractor or subcontractor.
There shall be two categories; Large Builder with
gross income of $25 million or more and Small
Builder with gross income of less than $25 million.
Any company licensed in Palm Beach County who
has fulfilled the intent and purpose of this award
may be nominated. In order to recognize the talent
in our state, the immediate past recipient is
ineligible. Submission is not required by the
nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Landscape Architect of the Year
This award will be given to a landscape architect
in Palm Beach County who has exemplified interest,
ingenuity, and outstanding performance which enhances
the architectural build environment.
In order to recognize the talent in our area,
the immediate past recipient is ineligible. Submission
is not required by the nominee.
Nominations may be made by any Palm Beach Chapter
AIA member.
Student Scholarship
The Palm Beach Chapter AIA will award scholarships
to students who reside in Palm Beach County and
are entering their third year of architectural
studies at an accredited college. The Scholarship
committee receives submittals and makes recommendations
to the Executive Board for approval.
