2018 Honor Award Winners
Bruce Retzch, AIA - James H. Anstis, FAIA Gold Medal
The James H. Anstis, FAIA Gold Medal recognizes an individual architect in Palm Beach County who has distinguished himself or herself in a manner resulting in a profound impact on the profession over an extended period of time. This year’s honoree is Bruce Retzsch. Bruce’s leadership and vision have made a significant impact on the architectural landscape of South Florida. He is a great mentor to all those that have been through RLC Architects and he is very well respected in the Architectural community. Finally, he has brought his vision and leadership to our  AIA Palm Beach board and has made great impact in all the activities that we provide to our members.
Jeffrey Silberstein, AIA - John Stetson, FAIA Award
The John Stetson Award recognizes the service an AIA Palm Beach Member that has gone above and beyond his or her service to the chapter. Jeffrey has won several design awards honoring his work in our area. Jeffrey has served on chapter committees helping to plan events. He has participated in the Architecture for Education program introducing children to architecture.
Cynthia Spray, AIA - Hilliard T. Smith Community Service Award

The Hilliard T. Smith Community Service Awards is given to recognize an architect whose leadership in community activities and service has been a direct benefit to the profession or community. Thanks to Cynthia’s efforts, the Architecture in Education program, supported and funded through the Florida Foundation for Architecture, was brought to Palm Beach County classrooms for the first time this year. This initiative, led by Cynthia at our local chapter level, engages architects and educators while providing a more diverse group of young people with an early appreciation of architecture.
Smith Architectural Group - Firm of the Year

The Firm of the Year award recognizes outstanding achievement in design, community services, education, and service to the profession and the AIA by an architectural firm.
Jeffrey Smith opened Smith Architectural Group in Palm Beach in 1989 working primarily in renovations and historic restoration. The firm has won more than 40 awards from AIA and many historical preservation societies. Jeffrey has been an AIA member since 1983 and served as AIA Palm Beach President in 1989.
The firm’s architectural contributions to the town have left a lasting legacy. They have done pro bono work including the restoration to the St. Edward Church and many other area landmarks.

Jonathan Villaman, Assoc. AIA - Associate Member of the Year

The Associate Member of the Year is given to an Associate AIA Member whose leadership, activities and service to AIA Palm Beach Chapter have been a direct benefit to the profession.
As an Associate Director of AIA Palm Beach, Jonathan has demonstrated a dedication and desire to contribute to the profession early in his career. Jonathan has been the driving force behind maintaining and growing our EPs lending library of ARE study materials, and the development of a Mentorship Toolkit which will further support EPs through targeted mentorship guidelines. Jonathan continues to work in the creation, development, and delivery of creative programs for the emerging professionals of our Chapter, including ARE study groups, EPs Networking Socials, and Firm Crawls.
John Mezzetta, AIA - Emerging Professional Mentorship Award

The Emerging Professional Mentorship Award recognizes an architect who has shown unwavering commitment to mentoring and developing emerging professionals in their respective firm or elsewhere in Palm Beach County
John is always willing and available to help, and when in need, everyone knows you can go to John for advice. He has helped to groom young interns in to savvy drafters, detail oriented, and efficient project managers. John may tell you what you need to know but, will also show you where to find it. His friendly and warm demeanor always makes him approachable and available to those around him. John Mezzetta, AIA is a Senior Associate and Registered Architect for over 25 years with Leo A Daly. He has practiced architecture for over 39 years.
Jonathan Burgess -Bob Graham Architectural Awareness Award
The Bob Graham, Honorary AIA, Architectural Awareness Award is given to an individual citizen or public official who is not an architect, and who by their interest, activity and concern for the profession of architecture, shall have advanced the cause of good design and planning and/or contributed to the dignity and value of the architectural profession.
Jonathan serves as the Vice President of Sustainable Operations at the Spinnaker Group. He is a licensed Landscape Architect and serial entrepreneur focused on ventures that promote sustainable products, landscapes, and real estate development. For a decade, one of his core focuses has been assisting architects, design professionals and construction teams with creating high performing, healthy buildings and neighborhoods.
Nina & Michael Marco, Casa de Marco Design - Presidential Citation
This citation recognizes Nina and Michael's dedication to preserving and rehabilitating historic structures in Delray Beach.
